From Mogán to Morro Jable – a wahoo and a new home port

Mein größter Fang: ein Wahoo!

On 1 August 2025 I headed to Las Palmas with my mate Michi – just the two of us this time. The goal: bring ME to Puerto de Mogán and spend a week’s holiday there.

An unusual catch

As always, we had a fishing line out on the way down the east coast of Gran Canaria. Level with the airport we got a bite – or so we thought. In fact a gull or a tern – we’re not quite sure which – had got itself tangled in the hook.

Of course the question was: what do we do now? We decided to free the bird. It was a bit tricky, and we were a little worried about getting bitten or scratched. But it worked perfectly – and the bird flew off free again.

Back at the wall – and a life-saving fan

After two nights at anchor off Mogán we asked at the harbour – and were lucky again: we were allowed back at the wall, this time at a berth a little further forward. The entrance was of course just as narrow and tricky as last time, but once again everything went perfectly – not a scratch, nothing.

With a rental car Michi and I then explored the island. I was able to show him lots of places we had discovered before. However, it was unbearably hot that week – so hot that one afternoon Michi suddenly disappeared. He came back with a fan from a little shop round the corner. Absolute salvation! From then on it was a bit more bearable.

Of course we went to Fernando’s again – the food was perfect as always, with superb wine. We spent a lot of time there. A great week!

Lara and Kati join us

After I had taken Michi to the airport, I had two or three days to myself. Then it was back to the airport – this time to pick up my daughter Lara and her friend Kati. We stayed in Mogán for another two or three days, then anchored off Mogán for a night or two and moved on to Arguineguín, where we also dropped anchor.

Night passage to Fuerteventura – with a wahoo

From Arguineguín we sailed across to Fuerteventura overnight and arrived in Morro Jable around midday on 14 August 2025. On the way I made the biggest catch of my life: a wahoo! That was of course a huge thrill.

I had already warned our friends Antje and Ingo over the radio – they were already in Morro Jable with their Thalassa, ME’s sister ship. The two of them had everything ready, and the fish was practically divided up before we had even arrived. In the evening Antje prepared it wonderfully, and we were invited to dinner with them.

New home port: Morro Jable

Morro Jable was to be our new home port for at least six months. The week here with Lara and Kati was perfect too: we had a car again, went out to eat a lot, had loads of fun and met great people – for example George from the jet ski rental, with whom we also partied in the evenings. But more about that in the next chapters, because we went on to do a lot more with these people.

Exploring Fuerteventura

With Lara and Kati we explored the island: the mysterious Villa Winter, the wild beach of Cofete and, right up in the north, Corralejo with its Popcorn Beach. We saw a lot and laughed an incredible amount.

Lara also negotiated with George that the two of them could go out on a jet ski. A quarter of an hour turned into almost three quarters – afterwards the two of them were completely worn out!

Lara and Kati on the jet ski

By the way: since we have a jet ski at home ourselves, Lara knew exactly what was what – there are different keys. With the green one the power is limited, with the yellow one you get full power. As she climbed on, she asked George quite matter-of-factly: “Where’s the other key?” He was pretty surprised! Once I had explained that we have our own jet ski, Lara was of course allowed to ride at full power. That made it even more fun.

On 28 August 2025 we flew home again. ME stayed in Morro Jable – originally just for six months. She is still there today. For how much longer? Who knows …
